By transforming a community, a plan responds to needs and opportunity
Goody Clancy collaborated with the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) on a Choice Neighborhood planning effort for the revitalization and transformation of the Wheatley Courts public housing project and its surrounding neighborhood situated on the east side of San Antonio. Midway through the planning process, SAHA made the decision to fast-track the effort to respond to a $30 million implementation opportunity. A nine-month planning timeframe was reduced to just under 90 days, and Goody Clancy temporarily relocated an employee to ensure a constant and robust community engagement process.
Application for the CNI implementation grant required detailed, rigorous examination of the multiple challenges to be addressed within a truly transformative plan. The plan identifies opportunities for a mixed-income, mixed-use neighborhood as well as for strategies focused on employment and education, on health and safety, and on transportation and job access.
IMPLEMENTATION
On December 12, 2012 SAHA was notified by HUD that they had been awarded one of the four implementation grants received nationwide during this grant cycle. Redevelopment initiatives are underway.
