Lewiston Riverfront Island Master Plan Goody Clancy Planning Urban Design

City of Lewiston, Maine, Lewiston, ME

Reconnecting Lewiston and Auburn to their riverfront and heritage

The industries of Riverfront Island, a 70-acre district delineated by the Androscoggin River and a system of canals, once drove the economies of Lewiston and Auburn. Today, following the decline of these industries, the twin cities are reinventing their waterfronts as anchors for their region. Goody Clancy led a planning process that engaged citizens from both communities in an exploration of possible futures that would infuse the downtowns with new life and energy. Developed through a series of public workshops and meetings, the plan embraces community aspirations, but is firmly anchored in market and economic realities.

Key guiding principles underlying the master plan include:

  • Tapping the power of the river through development of a riverwalk and improved public water access
  • Attracting a vital mix of uses including new housing and continued repurposing of historic buildings
  • Transforming the area into a walkable district, ensuring that Riverfront Island functions as a cohesive urban destination
