Crown Center Redevelopment Corporation, Kansas City, MO
Our master plan for a growing mixed-use district continues Crown Center’s fifty-year commitment to creating value through design excellence.
Home to Hallmark Cards’ world headquarters, Kansas City’s Crown Center attracts five million visitors annually to its stores, attractions, and well-programmed public squares. The Crown Center Redevelopment Corporation retained Goody Clancy to craft a vision for transforming the 85-acre Crown Center district into a 24-hour neighborhood, through the addition of a two million SF walkable district. Goody Clancy updated the master plan in 2019 to enhance positioning to capture resurgent office development interest, integrate more than 300 completed housing units, and leverage anticipated streetcar service.
The master plan repositions Crown Center for a new era in which working, living, and leisure thrive together in walkable districts:
- It guides development of eight new blocks, infill sites, and public green spaces, adding more than 750,000 SF state of the art office space, 50,000 SF retail, and 1,200 housing units—deployed in a variety of building sizes and types—bringing new vitality to Crown Center
- It introduces a new approach to the area’s public realm by lining public squares with active ground floor program and giving streets features that welcome pedestrians while creating a distinct character
- It makes new connections to adjacent neighborhoods undergoing revitalization
