Charles River Basin Master Plan

Metropolitan District Commission, Boston, MA
Planning for action: Strengthening the Charles River Basin as a public resource
Boston’s eight-mile-long Charles River Basin sits at the heart of one of the country’s first regional waterfront park systems. Working with Halvorson Design Partnership, Goody Clancy created the first master plan in 60 years to ensure the park’s vitality in a time of diminished public resources. More than 4,000 hours of volunteer public involvement resulted in a shared vision, an action plan, stronger advocacy, and new public-private partnerships.
Over time, the plan has leveraged:
- More than $120 million in improvements to the Charles River Basin
- Increased pedestrian access and expansion of green space along key segments of the riverfront
- Improved shoreline access and boating facilities
