Keeping downtown Asheville “weird”…while planning for change
The city of Asheville, North Carolina is known for its stunning mountain views and its vibrant downtown —home to artists, students, and unique shops and restaurants. Our planning process involved widespread engagement of and support from the city, business owners, and residents, resulting in a plan that balances new growth with preservation of Asheville’s distinctive character.
Meeting a wide variety of needs, the plan:
- Creates a shared, economically viable, 20-year vision for downtown Asheville as a place that continues to be creative, artsy, walkable, and fun—now with more businesses, more housing at a range of affordability levels, and more community gathering places
- Forged broad agreement within the highly engaged Asheville community, which had long been divided about the best direction for downtown
- Has positioned Asheville to attract new public and private investment, including more than $80 million in new homes, businesses, breweries, and restaurants
