Unitarian Universalist Association, Boston, MA

A faith community expresses its values through its new headquarters

A relocation to a former factory building in Boston’s vibrant, emerging Innovation District provides an opportunity for Goody Clancy to align the physical work space with the values and creative spirit of a faith community of more than 1,000 congregations, providing a dynamic work environment with all employees under one roof.

Leaving behind its 100-year home on Beacon Hill resplendent with historic architectural detail and defined by a traditional office environment, UUA has embraced an open office layout for its employees to promote collaboration and transparency. The new headquarters is designed for flexibility within the organization, while opening its doors to the larger community with its Heritage and Vision Center and the Chapel.

The design and program of the new forward-looking and sustainable headquarters reflects UUA’s vision of religious freedom, tolerance, social justice, and deep appreciation of all things living.

  • The project achieved LEED Platinum Certification, with Goody Clancy collaborating with UUA to educate and help UUA employees on all aspects of environmental and social sustainability
  • The design is grounded in simplicity and grace, with a range of flexible spaces for collaboration, open floor plans and healthy, day-lit surroundings designed to be warm, welcoming and inspiring for employees and visitors.
  • The design promotes employee health and wellness, and supports a range of working models, by providing shared “hotel” space for part-time and home-based employees working onsite when needed.
  • The new headquarters’ universal design aligns with UUA’s seven principles, tangible in all aspects of the new space, from the careful detailing of the stairs to the location of bathrooms, from well-considered lighting and acoustical strategies to the integration of hearing loops and state-of-the art technologies.
