Revitalizing a tarnished gem creates a model of sustainability
Completed in 1907, the U.S. Naval Academy’s Academic Complex of Mahan, Sampson, and Maury Halls is the core of this National Historic Landmark campus. Over the years, the trio of Beaux Arts-style buildings suffered from various unsympathetic alterations, and by the late 1990s the grand library sat unused and the flanking classroom buildings were woefully outdated. Goody Clancy’s master plan for the site converted the buildings to a Center for Humanities while incorporating sustainable design in a historic context.
Our complete interior and exterior renovation and restoration included replacement and modernization of all systems and restoration of historic finishes.
- We cleaned, repaired, and repointed exterior finishes of granite, terra cotta, and glazed brick.
- We installed high-tech communications systems and contemporary educational teaching devices to modernize the classrooms, labs, and offices.
- We upgraded entries and circulation for handicapped access and built connections to improve mobility between the three buildings.
- The project was performed in phases in order to maintain partial occupancy during construction.
- Installing new windows with low-E glass and an energy-efficient all-air HVAC system improved the building’s thermal and energy performance. Light wells, a skylight, stepped lighting levels, and occupancy sensors have enhanced lighting. Throughout construction, demolition materials and construction waste were recycled.
- This project is currently being used as a case study on sustainable design by the Department of Energy.
