Invigorating the social and academic activities at the heart of a prestigious campus
The primary goal for the renovation and expansion of Trumbull College was to enhance the existing spaces for student activities and create new spaces to support changing needs for study and interaction. One of nine residential colleges at Yale, it was designed by James Gamble Rogers in the Collegiate Gothic style and modeled after King’s College in England. Our design created contemporary new spaces within the Gothic exterior, restored and rehabilitated major historic spaces, and created sensitive additions where needed.
Our renewal of Trumbull College has invigorated the social and academic activities at the heart of the residential college system. The building provides a supportive and gracious home for over 400 students, a dozen faculty members and a score of honorary Fellows.
- Our complete renovation created new student social and recreational spaces in the previously underused basement and expanded the complex by adding a black-box theater beneath the enclosed courtyard.
- The dramatic formal spaces, including the dining hall, common rooms and library, were restored and new supporting areas were designed to gracefully improve the functionality of all areas.
- Reconfiguration of student rooms and suites to meet current housing and safety criteria preserved the character and detail of the spaces while integrating system upgrades.
- The exterior restoration of the building included re-pointing and cleaning of masonry, new slate roofs and the installation of new steel windows to match the original with added energy panels.
