Establishing a new heart – and a coordinated plan – for a diverse Long Island College
SUNY College at Old Westbury occupies a 609-acre campus on Long Island, approximately 20 miles from New York City. The College’s student body of 4,300, which includes residential and commuter students, is among the most diverse in the northeast. Recent campus growth has addressed functional needs but resulted in a somewhat fragmented place, falling short of College’s goal of creating a stronger and more cohesive community.
Working with the State University Construction Fund and a broad cross-section of Old Westbury faculty, staff and students, Goody Clancy completed in 2011 a master plan that includes several major initiatives:
- Creation of a new central campus Green surrounded by new and renovated buildings that will become the new hub of campus life
- Reprogramming of the existing Campus Center to become a more vital place incorporating expanded dining facilities and a renovated library
- Renovation and expansion of the natural sciences building to incorporate 50,000SF in additional space for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines
- Renovation and expansion of indoor and outdoor fitness and athletic facilities, and development of a trail network to foster more active use of the campus’s natural setting
Longer-term development of a new 80,000SF academic building to support anticipated enrollment growth
