Transforming Clifton Road: A partnership between Emory University and its neighbors

Located beside Emory University in the Clifton neighborhood of affluent Druid Hills, an Atlanta suburb, Clifton Road is an Olmsted-designed roadway that has become dominated by cars, strip centers, and industrial areas. Poor walkability and limited cycling accommodations limit access to nearby woods and streams. Working with Emory University and the Clifton community through the non-profit Clifton Community Partnership, Goody Clancy led the development of Urban Design Guidelines that would advance the community’s vision for this corridor—encouraging creative, pedestrian-friendly, high-quality design for new development.

These Urban Design Guidelines:

  • Provide a strategy for redevelopment of industrial areas, strip retail, and other underutilized sites
  • Integrate community building and restoration of the natural environment by channeling high-density (re)development to strategic sites, protecting natural and historic areas, and creating destination activity centers
  • Encourage new housing and transportation options to accommodate a full range of households, incomes, and age groups
  • Strengthen the corridor as a shared university-community district, encouraging the area’s diverse mix of people to exchange experiences daily
