Transit-Oriented Development
Planning

Planning that uses transit as the foundation for building community

Our transit-oriented development (TOD) work focuses on creating compact, walkable, mixed-use places around station areas—fostering community and maximizing opportunities for transit use for work trips, entertainment, or daily life. Our plans harness the value that transit brings to communities and regions, expanding transportation choices for the widest cross-section of people. By growing transit ridership, we also seek to improve the financial viability of transit systems.

Our projects address a wide range of opportunities:

  • Development strategies for entire transit lines or for individual stations
  • Retrofits of areas around existing stations or plans for development around new stations
  • Approaches to stimulating development around transit in downtowns, urban neighborhoods, suburban, or rural contexts
  • Understanding the potential of different transit services—subway, light rail, streetcar, commuter rail, or bus service—to influence development patterns
