Dennis Swinford, ASLA
Higher Education Planning Practice Leader
As the Leader of the Higher Education Planning practice, Dennis brings 30 years of experience in planning and implementing the future of higher educational institutions throughout the world. For the past decade, Dennis has led or been a senior member of campus planning teams at Harvard University, The University of Massachusetts Amherst, and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There, he led master plans, capital plans, campus system plans, precinct plans, and feasibility studies, setting the course for campus investments totaling more than $1 billion. These investments support campus research, teaching, housing, transportation, and administrative functions. He also directed the facilities programming and design of projects that resulted from the plans he helped establish, guiding their implementation to support plan goals, the needs of the users, and the missions of each institution. His leadership has provided vision, guidance, and support for projects through each institution’s governance, funding, and resource development processes. As part of this work, he served as the key liaison between campuses and their host communities, securing broad-based support and approval for each project.
Dennis is an expert at advancing complex, challenging projects that require consensus among multiple internal stakeholders, and achieving approval from public agencies influenced by demanding voters. His commitment to a long-term vision and collaborative spirit has provided institutions and teams with an understanding of key issues and ideas that has made each of his projects a success.
Dennis’s work at Goody Clancy includes master plans the University of Memphis, Western Illinois University, and Champlain College. He is currently working on master plans for Boston College, the University of Southern Maine, and the Community Colleges of Rhode Island.
