Goody Clancy seeks a Technical Architect to join our collaborative and mission-driven team. As a Boston-based education design firm, we partner with institutions on a variety of new-construction, renewal, and preservation projects to create environments where people are inspired to research, connect, strive, and wonder. Technical Architects actively engage documentation and construction project phases and are given many opportunities for growth and continued learning. The best candidate for this position will have experience and/or a demonstrated interest in education projects, and a familiarity in historic preservation/building renovations is a plus.  We are looking for creative, collaborative, and motivated professionals who are driven by a belief in the power of design to advance discovery, community, and opportunity.


Position Summary

In this role, you will serve as a technical leader, ensuring the quality, coordination, and constructability of projects from design through construction. You will collaborate closely with principals, project managers, designers, consultants, and contractors to develop technically sound architectural solutions and maintain high standards of documentation and project delivery.

You will lead the development and review of construction documents, oversee technical detailing and quality control efforts, and provide guidance on building systems, code compliance, constructability, and project execution. Your work will extend through construction administration, including submittal and shop drawing review, responses to RFIs, site observations, and resolution of field conditions. You will also mentor project teams and contribute to the advancement of firm-wide technical standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical development, coordination, and documentation of projects across all phases of design and delivery.
  • Develop and review architectural drawings, wall sections, details, schedules, and specifications to ensure technical accuracy and completeness.
  • Collaborate with principals, project managers, designers, and consultants to integrate design intent with technical and constructability requirements.
  • Coordinate with structural, MEP, civil, and specialty consultants to ensure complete and well-coordinated project documentation.
  • Lead project quality assurance and quality control reviews at key project milestones.
  • Review project documents for compliance with applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, life safety regulations, and firm standards.
  • Identify and resolve technical design challenges, coordination conflicts, and constructability issues.
  • Establish and maintain documentation standards, drawing organization, and digital project quality.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to project teams throughout project development.
  • Conduct site visits, field investigations, existing conditions assessments, and construction observations.
  • Lead construction administration efforts, including review of shop drawings, product data, samples, mock-ups, substitution requests, and other contractor submittals.
  • Review and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), field conditions, and clarification requests during construction.
  • Evaluate construction progress and completed work for conformance with contract documents and design intent.
  • Assist project teams in identifying project risks and developing practical technical solutions.
  • Research building systems, materials, assemblies, and emerging technologies to support project delivery and technical excellence.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of firm-wide technical standards, QA/QC procedures, and best practices.
  • Travel as needed for site observations, construction administration, project reviews, and client engagement.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Architect.
  • Strong technical expertise in building systems, construction methods, detailing, and project delivery.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards, and life safety requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience leading construction document production and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Extensive experience performing QA/QC reviews and technical document assessments. Exterior envelope certifications a plus.
  • Strong construction administration skills, including shop drawing review, submittal review, RFIs, field observations, punch lists, and contractor coordination.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit/BIM and construction documentation workflows.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor and develop staff in technical design and documentation practices.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving ability, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving project challenges.
  • Energy code review experience and certifications for PHIUS, CPHC, or CPHD a plus.
