A plan for tapping downtown Wichita’s unrealized potential
Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, needed to revitalize its downtown. Negative perceptions, “tired old buildings,” fragmented property ownership, and a car-oriented environment had all become barriers to attracting people and investment. Goody Clancy worked with a broad and deep cross-section of the Wichita community to develop an achievable, 20-year vision for realizing the downtown’s potential as a thriving city center.
Since its adoption, the plan has:
- Been rapidly implemented—within two years of the plan’s completion, downtown Wichita has added offices, housing, a public plaza, a parking structure, and seen the renovation of an old office building into a boutique hotel
- Revealed pent-up demand for nearly 1,000 units of new downtown housing, providing a foundation for the downtown’s resurgence
- Involved hundreds of Wichita residents from early planning stages through to implementation
