Faneuil Hall
National Park Service
Boston, Massachusetts
Our restoration of this National Historic Landmark, originally built in 1742, resulted in a celebration of distinguished spaces that had been obscured by years of inappropriate interventions and neglect. We successfully updated building systems while simultaneously preserving the building’s existing fabric. Today, Faneuil Hall continues to be used as a meeting place, market, and military headquarters.
Relevant Project Information:
- After a broad, participatory process of programming, Goody Clancy developed designs to provide handicapped access, restore and/or replace building systems, and bring the building into compliance with current codes, while still preserving its existing fabric.
- Installation of new systems, repair and replacement of plaster, and restoration of historic lighting.
- Restoration of existing historic wood windows and installation of interior storm panels with laminated glass. These new windows provide both a thermal and an acoustical buffer from outdoor conditions, and they eliminate harmful ultraviolet radiation.
- A new grade-level entrance and an elevator designed to serve all levels of the building make it universally accessible without altering the exterior shell.
- Improved sound system and arrangements for television events enrich the visitors’ experience in the Great Hall.
- A spectrum of stonework, whose deterioration has been arrested and preserved to document the building’s long history, marks the building’s exterior.
