This project involves the complete exterior envelope restoration of the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse located in Brooklyn, NY. Originally constructed in the 1890s with a major addition built in the 1930s, this Romanesque Revival building consists of granite and terra cotta facades and a slate roof. Owned and maintained by the U.S. General Services Administration, this historically significant building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a local Historical Landmark in the City of New York.
Relevant Project Information:
- Scope of work includes complete repair of the existing granite, repair or replacement in-kind of the existing terra cotta, replacement in-kind of the existing slate tiles, and replacement of the lead coated copper gutters and flashing.
- Comprehensive survey and investigation was conducted including archival research at local and regional repositories, a hands-on survey at all facades and roof using industrial rope access, a probe-based investigation at selective areas of terra cotta, and laboratory testing and analysis of existing materials.
- Full production of biddable Construction Documents.
- Update of the GSA Building Preservation Plan last modified in 1995.
