Mead Chapel Feasibility Study
Middlebury College
Middlebury, Vermont
For almost a century, Mead Memorial Chapel has been the location for religious, musical, and community events and ceremonies. The existing chapel has been the heart and soul of Middlebury College since its construction, but it has outdated systems, no flexibility in its use and no essential support spaces such as bathrooms. Three options are suggested for the better utilization of this treasured building: each builds incrementally upon the previous option. Respecting the historic and sacred character of Mead Chapel while adapting the space for the changing needs of religious, musical and secular life at Middlebury College is the primary goal of all options studied.
Sustainable Design:
- Reuse of existing building
- Proposed local materials
- Small footprint
- Improvements to envelope and mechanical systems (new windows, insulation improvements, energy recovery system, lighting control, geothermal wells)
