Parish House at Trinity Church
Trinity Church in the City of Boston
Boston, Massachusetts
The Parish House, originally designed by H. H. Richardson and used as an interim church space while the Sanctuary was completed, includes 13,000 SF over five floors and a connector tunnel to the Undercroft below the church. Goody Clancy‘s goal for this project was to renovate the outdated Parish House so that it would better serve the programming and administrative needs of the modern, urban parish.
Relevant Project Information:
- The architects reconfigured interior spaces and circulation to provide more functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces, including the division of a large first floor space into two areas and corridor, and the redesign of the third floor to accommodate private office spaces and cabinetry, while maintaining meeting space for large gatherings.
- While every effort was made to respect Richardson’s design, as well as the layers of renovation and intervention that had been introduced in the 1920’s and 1950’s, the architects made subtle alterations that harmonize with the character of the existing spaces and details.
- New HVAC and life safety systems were seamlessly incorporated into the building, and the reconfigured meeting spaces meet modern accessibility requirements.
- The existing northwest interior stair was reconfigured and extended to connect all floors, improving both circulation and life safety.
Sustainable Points:
- The Parish House uses the church’s new geothermal wells for heating and cooling.
