Living Cities
Baltimore, Chicago, Miami, and Minneapolis-St. Paul
Community consensus building, urban design, and graphic design assistance for a consortium of national foundations and corporations investing in urban revitalization.
Project Highlights:
- Living Cities has committed to investing more than $500 million over a decade in community revitalization, support for community-led development, and articulation of a new “urban agenda” to shape federal policy. Goody Clancy's selection to advise this initiative reflected the firm’s technical and strategic expertise and a record of successful planning for neighborhood revitalization.
- A decline in public funds for community revitalization has dramatically boosted the importance of private efforts to address economic and social problems in low-income urban neighborhoods. Atlhough the Living Cities foundations already had a long tradition of investing in urban neighborhoods, an earlier collaboration had demonstrated the magnified impact of coordinating human- and physical-development efforts.
Strategy:
For the Pilot Cities initiative, provide:
- analysis and policy-development support for national conferences on revitalizing urban commercial districts and creating effective strategies for developing mixed-income neighborhoods;
- participation in conferences, working sessions, and briefings with funders, community leaders, and local officials to support revitalization initiatives carried out under the Pilot Cities program; and
- analytical, marketing, and logistical contributions to a series of conferences and technical assistance programs to support the work of the foundations in each of the four "Pilot Cities."
