Town of Brookline
Brookline, Massachusetts
A plan to guide future change and growth in the Town of Brookline.
Project Highlights:
Situated at the heart of the Boston region, the Town of Brookline found its character and identity being shaped by complex regional forces beyond its control. The town sought a comprehensive plan that would enable it to shape change rather than reacting to it after the fact.
Strategy:
Over a two-year process, Goody Clancy help citizens articulate an overarching vision and goals and then created a detailed action plan. Three issues took priority in the process:
- Maintaining diversity in the face of spiralling housing costs through innovative strategies that can increase affordable housing output and protect existing units.
- Enhancing qality of life in residential and commercial areas with targeted investments, updated regulations, and new tools to strengthen neighborhood involvement in planning. Enhancement of open space and promotion of infill development in commercial areas play especially important roles.
- Balancing regional and local needs in a vision for Route 9 that recognizes the corridor's dual role as community Main Street and state highway. The vision balances transportation and land-use planning needs to accommodate mobility. development, urban design, and landscape.
