Miami, Florida

Miami’s first comprehensive, long-term plan for its parks and public spaces.

Recognition:

American Planning Association, Florida Chapter—2007 Award of Merit

Project Highlights:

  • Goody Clancy, leading a team of planners, landscape architects, and park-management professionals, worked with Miami residents and officials to develop a plan that realistically addresses each neighborhood’s open space needs. The process involved multiple public meetings and workshops in every Miami neighborhood
  • The city's first comprehensive, long-term plan for parks and public spaces establishes strategies for improving existing open spaces, creating new ones, using “green street” connections to tie parks and neighborhoods together, and providing recreational opportunities to meet residents' needs.
  • The city has embraced the plan enthusiastically. In the 18 months following its completion, the city opened five new parks and recreation spaces, hired its first landscape architect for the parks system, added nearly 30 park rangers and district managers, increased tree planting, streamlined the special-events permitting process, and begun designing three more parks and recreation facilities.
