City of Concord
Concord, New Hampshire

A comprehensive plan for managing growth in New Hampshire’s capital over 20 years.

Recognition:

Congress for the New Urbanism—2002 Charter Award

Project Highlights:

  • Obsolete zoning and uncoordinated transportation projects, among other elements, had allowed sprawl to blur the character of the city’s five villages, sever riverfront connections, and destroy cherished farm and conservation lands.
  • Goody Clancy's growth-management plan focuses on tactics for building a livable downtown; reinforcing the city's discrete, walkable villages; restoring connections to the Merrimack River; and preserving agricultural and natural resources.
  • An intensive public outreach program produced the vision, with twelve public workshops that drew 400 residents; a special insert in the Concord newspaper; an interactive project website; and a grade-school curriculum.
  • Concord's city council adopted the 20/20 Vision and has begun to implement its recommendations for transportation, land use, economic development, and conservation planning.

"Goody Clancy helped Concord formulate a long-range vision – not just another plan that would sit on the shelf collecting dust. This was not an easy task. The vision incorporated significant community input after more than a year of public sessions. The Concord City Council has adopted it. The vision will be used as the platform for future planning as well as the current updating of the city’s master plan. The Goody Clancy team did a great job pulling this all together."
