Goody Clancy is planning a transformative new chapter for Somerville’s Inner Belt and Brickbottom districts. The 160-acre area is the largest redevelopment opportunity close to downtown Boston—as it gains service from an extension of the MBTAs’ Green Line transit line around 2016. A careful multi-modal analysis of transportation opportunities and constraints in the area, is identifying ways to make the most of new transit, pedestrian and bike access opportunities with a “complete streets” approach while also accommodating significant regional traffic flows. Goody Clancy’s team is integrating these findings with its economic development and urban design strategies to prioritize the infrastructure investments that will do the most to unlock the area’s enormous potential of 6 to 10 million square feet of mixed-use development.

The emerging vision for Inner Belt/Brickbottom delivers on community aspirations for recreational path networks, parks, jobs, housing choices, and distinct sense of place through practical, incremental steps that leverage market-based development opportunity to create a sustainable, highly-accessible destination critical to the economic future of Somerville and the Boston region.
