Goody Clancy Receives National Planning Awards!

We are honored to announce that the American Planning Association has selected Goody Clancy's Plan for the 21st Century: New Orleans 2030 as the recipient of the 2011 Achievement Award for a Hard-Won Victory! The plan also received a 2011 Excellence Award from the APA Louisiana Chapter.

The New Orleans City Planning Commission chose a team led by Goody Clancy to prepare the first master plan in city history. Moving beyond the multiple recovery initiatives that followed Hurricane Katrina, the plan lays out a 20-year vision of livability, opportunity, and sustainability. The three mutually reinforcing vision themes point the city toward a future of lively, walkable neighborhoods that balance historic and cultural preservation with new construction; a diversified economy that supports existing industries and nurtures emerging businesses; and green and resilient infrastructure, water management, and energy-efficient systems. A fully inclusive process—more than 5,000 people joined formal and informal sessions at citywide, district, and neighborhood levels—and mechanisms that build public involvement into future development review helped reshape attitudes about the value of planning. Implementation began in 2010, following the plan’s adoption by the commission and city council and voters’ approval of a charter amendment that gives plan recommendations the force of law. A comprehensive zoning ordinance consistent with the plan will be completed in 2011.
