Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research
Whitehead Institute
Cambridge, MassachusettsThis internationally-renowned facility—comprising biology, microbiology, biochemistry and genetics laboratories—was built in two phases. Goody Clancy designed the original 166,000 SF facility, completed in 1984. Successful research programs increased the population and created a need for an additional 77,000 SF of research and support space, also designed by Goody Clancy.
Relevant Project Information:
- Contains sixty laboratories with related support facilities, faculty offices, an animal suite, an auditorium, a library, a cafeteria, and a conference room.
- Central shared equipment rooms also function as supplementary east-west corridors -- a feature that encourages interaction between researchers from different laboratories.
- Additional social spaces include lounge areas on each floor, hallways with chalkboards for spontaneous brainstorming sessions, and a curving open stair between laboratory floors.
- Laboratories and public spaces line the perimeter of the building to maximize access to daylight.
Sustainable Design:
- Photoelectric sensors control laboratory lighting. As natural light increases, artificial light levels decrease, and even light levels are maintained while energy use is reduced.
Awards:
- Associated General Contractors -- Build Massachusetts Honor Award
- Pre-stressed Concrete Institute -- Excellence in Architectural Design
