Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center
Emmanuel College
Boston, MassachusettsOur design for this new 50,000 SF science building addresses the need that was identified in the College’s strategic plan to “develop a national model of 21st-century undergraduate science education.” The building is designed as a series of science “neighborhoods” to encourage interaction among disciplines and take best advantage of shared facilities. The building is attached to Emmanuel’s main classroom building, the 1918 Collegiate Gothic Administration Building. At the intersection of the two, a multi-story daylit interaction space encourages interchange between science faculty and students and other non-science majors to enrich the quality of liberal arts education on the campus.
Relevant Project Information:
- The new building will house Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Psychology/Neuroscience Departments.
- The space will provide teaching labs, faculty research space, faculty offices and shared departmental commons.
- A new 199-seat lecture hall and small theater is being planned for an area formerly occupied by the original Emmanuel College gymnasium.
- The project also includes a major restoration and renovation of the 130,000 SF Administration Building and the design of a new 130-car underground parking garage.
