Cambridge, MassachusettsThis project involved a comprehensive redesign and phased renovation of a 130,000 SF chemistry laboratory designed by I.M. Pei in 1967. The building houses primary research facilities for organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry. Our major design challenges included: increasing the fume hood exhaust capacity by 40%, separating desk areas from lab benches to increase safety, replacing the auxiliary-air system with full air-conditioning, and daylighting the labs—all within extremely tight floor-to-floor dimensions.
Relevant Project Information:
- Renovation involved the replacement of all mechanical and electrical systems, fume hoods, casework, and finishes.
- Three-phase approach was used to keep the building occupied and operating during nearly three years of construction.
- Renovated labs are organized into six-person open bays with connections to adjacent support areas and labs.
- Glazed interior walls bring daylight into recessed interior spaces.
Sustainable Design:
- Reuse of existing building
- Improved windows reduce energy consumption and improve comfort
- Manifolded exhaust stacks reduce fan energy use
- Original lab casework was re-used off-site
- Combination hood sash reduces energy use
- More intensive program than original actually uses less air volume
