Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, MassachusettsThis new 412,000 SF research complex brings together three distinct research entities to create a world-class center for brain science. Programmed to contain a rich array of wet and dry laboratories and animal facilities supporting biology, biochemistry, neurobiology, behavioral and cognitive research, the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex is designed around a daylit, sculpturally-shaped atrium lined with tea rooms, faculty offices and terraces to foster interaction among the scientists.
LEED Silver Certified
Relevant Project Information:
- Building straddles an active rail and transit corridor that bisects the tight urban site.
- Special mitigation design measures were developed to protect the research and equipment from ground-borne or structure-borne vibration.
- Each of the three research entities -- the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences -- has a different exterior expression while being unified by a limited materials palette.
- Research entities share facilities including an auditorium/conference center, a café, seminar rooms, and a major public space that bridges the railroad track.
- Lead designer: Charles Correa Associates
