The Jean Yawkey Student Center
Emmanuel College
Boston, MassachusettsThe Yawkey Center meets several of Emmanuel’s long term needs in a single building. It provides a modern athletic facility and student recreation space, along with much needed community space for resident and commuter students. This project grew directly out of Goody Clancy’s Campus Master Plan, which identified this location for new dining and recreational facilities.
Relevant Project Information:
- The design included structured parking that allowed for the creation of an important new landscaped greenspace at the heart of the campus.
- Meeting rooms, recreation space and informal lounges are located in a 24-foot-high glazed gallery that opens onto the central quadrangle of the campus.
- The building also provides a welcoming new face for Marian Hall by connecting to the existing 1960s classroom and dining facility.
- A daylit, three-story atrium is the new "living room" for the college. This dramatic, centrally located community space incorporates expanded dining facilities, as well as existing classrooms and labs into the new Student Recreation Center.
Sustainable Design:- Large areas of north-facing glazing provide daylighting and connections to the landscape of the quadrangle outside.
- The new landscaped quad, designed as part of this project, helps manage stormwater runoff and provides a focal outdoor room for the campus.
