Thompson Hall Exterior Restoration
University of New Hampshire
Durham, New HampshireThompson Hall was constructed in 1892 as the first building erected on the University of New Hampshire Durham Campus. It is the signature building for the University of New Hampshire and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Goody Clancy was hired by the University to perform a full evaluation of the exterior envelope, develop construction documents for bidding, and to see the project through construction. The restoration of the exterior and the structural stabilization of the building have returned this campus icon to its original understated glory.
Relevant Project Information:
- Full slate roof and copper flashing replacement, including meticulous craftsmanship to replicate the copper turret caps and bases.
- Structural stabilization of the wood framed roof structure.
- 100% masonry repointing and cleaning of the granite foundation, window sills, lintels and arches; red brick walls; unique brown and tan mottled-brick turrets.
- Fabrication of unique tan and brown mottled brick by a brick and terra cotta manufacturer in Star, NC.
- Reinstatement of mottled brick at porte cochere turrets (previously replaced with granite).
- Reinstatement of original mortar colors and historically appropriate paint trim colors.
- Wood window sash replicated with double glazing.
- Design of an arched awning to blend with the Romanesque features on the building for the east entrance.
- Through the generous donations of ten individuals and companies, stained glass windows were reinstalled in the east stairwell. Stained glass consultant Julie L. Sloan carefully studied historic photographs to create an interpretation of the original windows. Glass types and colors are based on those used in decorative American windows of the 1890’s.
- Life cycle analysis was performed on roofing material (new vs. reuse of slate shingles) and windows (restoration vs. replacement; wood vs. aluminum or pvc) to assist the university in decision making.
Sustainable Design:
- Exterior restoration of an existing building.
